Gettin Oscar ready & The King's Speech
Well, here's my new blog! I LOVE my job at the movie theater for a couple reasons...but mainly because of the free movies ;)

My dream is to make movies. Preferably for Disney as an animator, but I'm going to try and get well versed in all aspects of film making. This blog shall help with one. Movie reviews. Not sure if anyone would read this, but it's at least a good way to get me used to writing more!

Anyway, the Academy Awards.

Last year when I watched them I had A LOT of fun. I was alone in watching it, but still! It was the first year I watched it when I actually have seen most of the movies nominated! This year is a little more difficult for me to do so since I was in Disney World for half the year. I am beyond excited that I got my theater job back so I can at least try and catch up for the last month before the Oscars on Feb 27th! :)

The movies nominated (the ones I've seen will be striked, ones I plan to see asap will be bold :

Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
The King's Speech
127 Hours
The Social Network
Toy Story 3
True Grit
Winters Bone

The Fighter...I think was already in theaters but I didn't get a chance to see it. Too bad? I don't know. I don't like those kind of movies too much...The Kids Are All Right looked interesting, and I think it was playing in Downtown Disney, but before I heard it was nominated. Plus, I had no idea what it was about or if it was good... 127 Hours I'm disappointed in myself for not going out to see. The arm scene sorta scared me away...but it's also what intrigued me to see it. Catch 22, I guess. Lol
Then Winter's Bone...never heard of it. :/

Black Swan and True Grit are next up for me. And after this post with my review of The King's Speech, I do plan on posting what I thought of these two! :)

The King's Speech

To be honest, I didn't have interest in seeing this movie at first. "Another monarch movie?" I thought...but it's nothing like that. Yes, it's about a monarch's rise to power, but the heart of the story is not about his fight for power. In fact, he's forced into it by his brother, David's, lack of responsibility for the throne he inherited at first.
The movie begins with a speech to be given by Albert, family calls him Bertie (Colin Firth, who by the way I think should win Best Actor. Of course I haven't seen Jeff Bridges in True Grit yet). Normally you're not thrown into the part of the movie when you "feel" for the main character within the first 5 minutes, but man did I FEEL for this poor guy! Bertie has a speech impediment. He stammers, and it's heartbreaking to watch. Colin Firth really played the role well. I just wanted to give the guy a hug! Thank GOD for Best Supporting Actress nominee Helena Bonham Carter (Bertie's wife, Elizabeth). She was one of the only people Bertie had no problem opening up to and not stammer as much when he talks to her. She understood him, and tries to help him as much as she can. She was the one who found Logue, a speech therapist, to help Bertie with his stammer.
Logue, Geoffry Rush (he is also up for Best Supporting Actor), did a WONDERFUL job. He was funny, and seemed completely natural in his role. You find that you trust him completely with his job to help Bertie.
My favorite scene has got to be when Logue gets Bertie to start cursing. He finds that he doesn't stammer when he's cursing, and it was about 3 minutes of Bertie shouting a string of words you wouldn't normally hear from a King...
Of course, the speech King George VI (Bertie. I guess kings had the option to change their names when they take the throne?) had to give was what the movie was leading up to. It was a speech to his entire kingdom about the impending war they are thrown into thanks to Hitler (played by...um..Hitler.) I'm pretty sure you can guess how he does, but it was still gripping to watch.

Should you see it? Yes and no. If you're into movies just for the action and comedy, then no.
Best Picture? Not sure yet. As I've mentioned, I still need to see Black Swan and True Grit. Compared to what I've seen it's hard to say. Inception is probably still my top pick.

There we go! First review done! Woo! :) Still a little...all over the place. But, hey. I'm learnin. I'm probably going to see Black Swan tomorrow. I have nothing to do all day, so I might even see True Grit too.

I also want to do more than just reviews here. Maybe something interactive? Guess the movie quote is always fun with my friends and I. Guess the movie from random screen shots? Movie trivia? What?? Let me know! :) Ooohh Movie news...YES, I'll do movie reviews AND movie news. Maybe reviews will be just that. But when I post movie news, that's when the fun shtuff can come in.

I needs feedback! :D

Time to...figure out a layout for this thing.
